Welcome New Residents

Congratulations on choosing to attend the University of Florida, one of the finest institutions in the country, and welcome to the Gator Nation! While living in UF’s residence halls we hope you’ll learn valuable life lessons to complement your academic studies. We at DHNet@Home recognize that your ability to contact your friends and family via the internet is of the utmost importance to you while you reside here at UF. Further, through social networking sites like Facebook and by taking advantages of the resources provided on the internet, you can become an interconnected student and live up to your fullest potential. DHNet@Home is here to make sure that you have consistent and reliable access to the Department of Housing Network while you stay in our residence halls. However, did you know there are dozens of ways you can accidentally lose your connection? For example, you can receive a P2P violation from programs that don’t appear to violate Acceptable Use Policy (described below), like World of Warcraft or Cybersky-TV. Also, did you know that if you’ve purchased a Mac you will be unable to share your connection with an XBOX, PS3, or Wii? If not, we’ve provided this page to help you avoid all of that and more. We strongly suggest that you read it.

Connection Requirements

Remember when we mentioned that if you’ve bought an Apple computer you won’t be able to share your internet with your gaming console (and will therefore be unable to download any game demos or challenge your friends online)? Well, here’s where you find out all about that and more. If you don’t meet these basic requirements you will be completely unable to connect, so we’d recommend reading them closely.

Connection Recommendations

There are many programs ranging from security software to Massively Multiplayer Online games that can interfere with the stability of your connection. This section is here to help you avoid getting an accidental restriction or having to visit the DHNet@Home Help Desk. While most of the information provided here is simply advice, we strongly recommend that you take it. Trust us. We fix residents’ computers all day. We know what we’re talking about.

Support

Sometimes, even if you’ve read every word of our most informative website, computers just decide to be difficult. Don’t fret! The Housing Department provides an invaluable support service to all residents to help them with this very problem. DHNet@Home technicians will be stationed in convenient locations throughout the campus to assist you with all of your trouble shooting needs. And guess what; it’s free! That’s right, the DHNet@Home trouble shooting services are free to all residents. Just check the DHNet homepage for an up-to-date listing of the times and locations of the DHNet@Home Help Desk. We also provide alternative support solutions. Please click below to find you what you can do to get reconnected.

Policies

We must enforce some basic rules to maintain our network. Keep in mind that once we provide you with the rules of our network you will be held responsible for abiding by them, even if you have not read them. Below is the link to DHNet’s acceptable use policy. Please read it thoroughly.

Services

There is an Ethernet (internet) port in your room. That port connects you to a blazing fast and nearly impenetrable wired network that we affectionately call DHNet. We also provide wireless access to DHNet in all residential common areas and we’re working very hard to extend that wireless signal into individual rooms. If you’re curious about our network or would like to learn some internet jargon to baffle your friends, click the links below to find out more.
