Recommendations for Using DHNet Internet Services

This page has been developed to provide you with a base guideline of the programs that we found to have caused connection problems and/or DHNet AUP violations. Please note that this list is NOT inclusive of all programs and that it is up to you to know what type of software is installed on your computer and if will create a violation of the DHNet Acceptable Use Policy.

Virus Protection Software

Unfortunately, many 3rd party virus protection programs will inhibit Windows from properly executing the 802.1X protocol. Here are some popular programs that are known to cause issues:

  • AVAST! Security Software
  • McAfee Security Center
  • Norton 360
  • Trend Micro Internet Security

Please note that this list is incomplete. Many lesser known virus protection programs may also cause connection interruption. Also, having these programs doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to connect. While we recommend uninstalling these programs and strongly encourage avoiding any subscription fees, the technicians stationed at the DHNet@Home help desks will still attempt to reconnect your machine to our network if these programs are installed. Be prepared, however, because it is possible that the only way to restore connection would be to remove these programs. If this is the case, the DHNet@Home technician will install a free version of McAfee Anti-Virus which is offered to all UF students on www.software.ufl.edu.
