Requirements

Below is the list of items you will need to connect to DHNet. These requirements are in addition to the University of Florida's academic technology requirements and recommendations. When you check-in at your residence hall, you will be given a CD configure your computer for DHNet.

Wired:

  • A computer with a compatible operating system. In short most modern operating systems: Windows XP SP2 or later, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and later, and most major Linux distributions (for Ubuntu users, we recommend at least Hardy Heron 8.04). DHNet is compatible with any operating system that supports PEAP authentication over 802.1x.
  • Computers connecting to DHNet should also have an RJ-45 ethernet port.
  • An ethernet cable (category 5 or higher) will be necessary to connect to the port in your room. Please note that an ethernet cable is larger and has 4 pairs of wires (or 8 total), whereas a phone cord has 2 pairs (or 4 total) wires.
  • NOTE: The Department of Housing and Residence Educations DOES NOT provide ethernet cables to residents. Residents must purchase ethernet cables on their own.
  • NOTE: Mac OS X does not support connection sharing over an 802.1x connection, therefore connecting a video game console, TiVo, etc. is not possible with a Mac.

Wireless:

  • The same operating system restrictions from the Wired requirements apply to wireless connections. The difference is a computer must have at least a Wireless-B card, either internally or externally.
